Maison Heler: a surreal tale carved in architecture

October 7, 2025

Designer: Philippe Starck
Location: Metz, Franța

Rising above the dynamic Amphithéâtre district of Metz, Maison Heler is far more than a hotel – it is a surreal work of architectural storytelling by Philippe Starck.

Conceived as a poetic tribute to a fictional inventor named Manfred Heler, the hotel fuses fantasy and function in a one-of-a-kind structure: a monolithic nine-story base crowned by a traditional 19th-century-style Lorraine house seemingly uprooted and levitated above the city.

Inside, Maison Heler offers 104 elegantly minimalist rooms, two restaurants, two bars, and event spaces.

Each corner reveals a whimsical world of imaginative detail, from inverted rocking chairs to Starck-designed objects inspired by the fantastical “Catalogue d’objets introuvables”.

The hotel’s heart, La Cuisine de Rose, is a romantic brasserie wrapped in soft hues and inventive cuisine, while the rooftop “Maison de Manfred” combines sweeping views with stained-glass artistry and soulful French dishes.

Maison Heler is more than a hotel – it’s a conceptual sculpture, a narrative space where design, literature, and surrealism meet.

Echoing the neighboring Centre Pompidou-Metz, it invites guests to dream, dine, and imagine within a liveable work of art.

As Starck puts it, “Maison Heler is a game on uprooted roots” – an architectural reverie where earth and sky, history and invention, all merge into one.
