The Maiji Mountain Visitor Center – a pilgrimage in space and light

October 29, 2025

Surrounded by the undulating peaks of China’s Tianshui region, the Maiji Mountain Visitor Center is a contemporary homage to an ancient spiritual landscape.

Designed in harmony with the famed Maiji Mountain Grottoes – Buddhist cave temples carved into sheer cliffs since the Former Qin Dynasty – the new center bridges millennia of cultural dialogue between Central Plains and Western regions.

The architecture draws directly from the mountain’s circumambulatory tradition, mirroring Buddhist rituals of spiritual progression.

Six trapezoidal volumes form a ring-like structure, symbolic of reincarnation and inclusion.

Their interlocking forms allow shifting natural light to animate the space, guiding visitors on a clockwise journey through reception, digital installations, exhibitions, and a cultural center.

Inside, column-free spaces offer flexibility while evoking tranquillity.

The ceiling, adorned with reinterpretations of grotto murals, evokes the sacred within a modern shell.

Light, shadow, and slope replace spectacle with serenity, offering both reflection and connection.

By integrating the terrain’s natural rhythm and Buddhist cosmology, the design transforms architecture into experience.

The Maiji Mountain Visitor Center invites visitors into a meditative journey through history, culture, and space, reaffirming the power of design as both cultural vessel and spiritual guide.
