Brick, craft, and context: Christ & Gantenbein’s redefined urban edge in Hamburg

December 12, 2025

In the heart of Hamburg, Christ & Gantenbein’s new mixed-use building masterfully weaves tradition with innovation. Positioned between the historic Nikolaifleet canal and the bustling Hopfenmarkt square, the project reinterprets Hamburg’s Brick Expressionist heritage through a bold, sculptural façade.

Clad in red brick sourced from the Elbmarsch region and produced by the last traditional ring kiln brickyard, the building’s exterior celebrates local craftsmanship. Semi-circular pilasters give rhythm and depth to the structure, while recessed windows and glazed green frames offer a refined contrast and material richness.

Two volumes distinguish the building’s functions: a denser, taller office wing that anchors the corner and a quieter residential wing overlooking the water. Setbacks, recesses, and curved pilasters not only respond to the site’s geometry but create a dialogue with the surrounding historic and contemporary architecture.

Inside, a flexible office layout benefits from daylight on multiple sides, while apartments enjoy privacy and canal views. The ground floor opens to urban life with a restaurant and multifunctional spaces along the waterfront. Balancing historic reference with contemporary clarity, this project is a nuanced addition to Hamburg’s evolving urban identity.
