MVRDV reimagines Shanghai’s industrial past in vibrant GATE M West Bund Dream Center

October 28, 2025

MVRDV’s latest project, the GATE M West Bund Dream Center, marks a bold transformation of a former cement factory into a dynamic cultural and leisure district on Shanghai’s revitalized waterfront.

Embracing adaptive reuse over demolition, the masterplan weaves together a diverse mix of existing industrial structures and unfinished remnants from past developments, creating a layered urban composition that is both cohesive and characterful.

At the heart of the complex is the monumental M Factory, where raw concrete volumes are accented by striking orange circulation elements.

The lower level houses the BLOOMARKET – a hybrid of food market and fine dining, while the upper level offers a flexible, column-free cultural venue.

Nearby, a massive silo has been converted into a climbing center, with vibrant exterior routes leading to rooftop viewpoints.

The older factory buildings are celebrated as focal points, while newer structures serve as a neutral backdrop, finished with green roofs and terraces that open toward the riverside.

A landscape by Field Operations ties the ensemble together, creating public spaces that invite movement, play, and reflection.

This vibrant reinvention of an industrial relic preserves Shanghai’s heritage and exemplifies how thoughtful design can lead urban regeneration with creativity and care.
